People I Met in the Hospital (2010)
Following a series of inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations, I found myself revisiting memories of the people I had met, many of whom I befriended during my brief stays. My recovery process led me to create an homage to my fellow patients, in which I used the scattered and disparate facts I had learned about them and their lives to imagine what they might be like outside of the confinement of the institutional setting. Though we were connected only briefly by a shared struggle with mental illness, I valued and sympathized with what they revealed about themselves, and I chose to physically re-imagine myself in their place. By relating and inserting myself within their stories I aim not to sensationalize or inspire, but to practice radical empathy through self-imaging.
